Away to the Mountains - Prologue

I have hiked with family and friends on mountain trails in the Cascade Mountain range, and also trails in the Olympic Mountain range. The eternal presence of the sacred seemed to accompany us as we hiked through forests, near mountain lakes and experienced the force of winds on cliffs or above the tree line. These past experiences inspired this song. Johnny and I were still working on this song when our friend Rich past away. Rich was a talented bass player, a chef, and the guy who remembered everyone’s birthday. Rich often spoke fondly of his family, especially his mother, Donna. Johnny asked Donna if we could add this song as a tribute to Rich, to the song list for his memorial. “Away to the Mountains” was performed at Rich’s memorial by Johnny, Rich’s niece Rebecca and nephew Michael.
