One of my fellow poets, Glenna Cook, encouraged me to try using the poetic form of the villanelle for writing lyrics. The process of a little rearranging of lines and plucking out the poem’s refrain to use in the arrangement was challenging and amusing at the same time. Johnny seemed to enjoy working his musical magic and editing skills to create the song.
lyrics
Intro
Neil’s was too timid, too shy to reveal
His Friend, Lucille, his heart did steal
v1
Neil was too timid, too shy to reveal
He was smitten by his dear best friend
Lucille, so vivacious, could not conceal
Her her wit and charm, she’s not to be penned
v2
Neil’s friend Lucille, his heart did steal
His heart raced like a spinning wheel
Her kindness to him, he must commend
Lucille became more than a friend
v3
Neil’s friend Dale, had his eye on Lucille
Oh, this folly must end
Neil was no longer to shy to reveal
His love, was true and real
v4
Neil asked Lucille …”How did she feel?”
Lucille took the hand of her friend
Neil was no longer too shy to reveal
His friend Lucille his heart did steal
